what is the purpose of the layer mask on photoshop?

OMG this i read almost 5-6 yrs back but thank you for testing me knowledge... ok here we go...
In PS Layer Masks are a very powerful part and its all bcoz of this:
1. Layer Masks are editable selections that play an important role in non destructive editing
2. Layer Masks offer flexibility because they can be almost completely treated as a full gray scale image, which allows the use of filters, selection tools, adjustment tools, etc.
3. They have a visual strength, meaning that with a short look on the layers you can see how they affect the image
4. They offer extra flexibility by being part of vector masks, layer sets, adjustment layers, etc.
5. Layer masks allow you to save selections (so if u close the document it will get save with the document and next time u can re-use)
6. Layer Mask are quite often used to hide pixels, but can also be used to mask the result of an adjustment layer.
Now every one use layer mask in PS in different meaner. Its depend what u want to use or wat result u r looking for.
PS is very powerful tool and u can't say tat its only 1 way to do the things in PS 1000 mouth 1000 styles to edit any image in PS.
