What is the purpose of Process Image Name called "System" in windows task manager?

On my Windows XP system, task manager is showing a process Image Name called "System", having user name 'System'. This process is sucking my memory badly, and I am not even able to kill the process. Moreover, I am more interested in knowing the basic purpose of this 'system' process.

P.S : This is NOT 'system idle process', i know this one is supposed to consume machine's resources.

HELP!!
