what is the point of having a equalizer if your stereo already has one built in?

i was wondering what the point of a EQ or a "Crossover" was for in a car stereo.. Usually in todays world the head unit has a equalizer already built into it, but still to this day they sell EQ's. If you could answer this question i would appreciate it. also i was just wondering what a crossover is used for. i know a little about car stereos but i love to learn new things about the verious world of audio
