What is the point and what is flashing an Xbox 360?

What is flashing an xbox 360 and what does it do? Does it let you play burned xbox games? what is the difference between firmware flashing and regular flashing?
 
Flashing basically gits rid of that
block when you try to play a non xbox
or xbox 360 game so when you ,,,, uhh,,, "get" games on the Internet and put them on a DVD it can play in your xbox, but I think you need some kinda soft wear and I don't know what the difference is
