I heard a story when I was younger about this new teacher, and he got hired to teach in a one room schoolhouse for only boys. This was way back when, and the boys had to wear a suit to school, so all the boys walk in in their stiff suits and sit down. The teacher tells him his name, and then explains that he has a few rules that they MUST abide by, but that they could choose the rest of the rules and the punishment. The spent most of the day deciding on rules, then right before they left this one young man who was obviously the leader of the group proposed that all rules have the same punishment. The had to walk to the front of the classroom take off their jacket and receive ten licks.They all agreed and left for the day. The school teacher decided that it was a good day and hearing their discussion gave him a good reference point of their education and that he had already started to remember most of the boys names. The year went on and by Christmas break all but one of the boys had broken at least one rule and received their punishment, it was almost a rite of passage. The one boy who had not broken any rules was the poorest of them all and you could tell he did everything he could not to break a single rule, but he was a good student and the teacher didn't mind him. Well after New Year's Day, they returned to school, and the poor boy was the only one not there for attendance. The teacher decided that after school he would go look in on him. So the school day went on for an hour and then he decides to show up. The entire class began too laugh, because they knew that he would get his. The teacher looked at him and asked,"Why are you late?"
"I was helping my mother this morning."
"Do you know what the first rule of this class is?"
"Never be late, or receive your licks no exceptions."
"So let's get it over with, take off your coat." The boy was reluctant and started to plead with the teacher to let him keep his coat on. Eventually the teacher reminded him that he had agreed to this at the beginning, so the boy slowly took off his coat to reveal his bare back. Now it was winter and well bellow freezing and he didn't have a shirt on, but he knelt down and waited for his licks. Then The leader of the class, the one who suggested the punishment stood and asked the teacher to stop. "But the rules were broken, and the rules state that a punishment must be given. I cannot neglect my duty to teach you to keep your agreements."
"The rule doesn't stat who has to take the blows." So he strode to the front, laid his coat on the poor boy, knelt over him and waited. "He can't be wearing his coat, my coat is fine and he is also wearing me. Either get this over with or we'll stay here all day." The teacher looked at this perfect example of grace, and as a tear rolled down his cheek, gave the ten blows. And the leader of the group took them without a sound.
