I saw a commercial on T.V for an orange colored gps device (i seem to remember it being expensive) that can be used to send a signal if you get lost or hurt in the middle of nowhere and need help. It sends a signal to a satellite and calls some national rescue service. It also can be used to upload your global position to a website so your family can get on there and check your progress. I thought i remember it being able to send messages as well.
