It's about a soldier, captured as a POW, and set to be hanged, but the rope breaks, and he gets away, returning to his love. But at the end, the reader finds out that he was just fantasizing before they drop the door, and he ends up being hung. I remember reading it in high school, right after reading Edgar Allen Poe stories. Can't remember if it's his work or not, but it kind of has that signature macabre twist he's known for.
