What is the most INFLUENTIAL film of the past 15 years?

I'm not talking about the best here, or the one which is your most favourite and has had a great impact upon you - just the most influential on other film / media / society at large.

...and remember, it's the one that has had the greatest impact upon the world in the past 10-15 years (so Citizen Kane need not apply :D ;) ).

I think a lot of Tarantino's work has been extremely influential, particularly Pulp Fiction. If you look at the way that narratives, timelines and witty scriptwriting has changed since then, it's impact can really be felt.

Also, Scream really changed the teen horror genre around! Yes, 'New Nightmare' influenced it slightly, but Kevin Williamson's script really kicked @$$!

Also, if you look at the parodies that came from both films, you can see just how far they pushed filmmaking and the way in which we view films.

Directorially and story wise?

Personally I'd say Akira.

The Matrix, although a blockbuster has influenced all modern blockbuster filmmaking. If it weren't for Akira, The Matrix would not have existed...

1) Band of Brothers was a television series
2) It was made by Spielberg's production crew and was executive producer
It was directed mostly by Tom Hanks, who starred in Ryan,

Thats like saying Wierd Science the TV show was influenced by Wierd Science the movie !!!

Boat trip :p - I walked out of this movie...

I am not sure what the most INFLUENTIAL film is, as there are so many different genres, and I have not seen every recognised film in each of these to notice any changes in style etc... From an animation films point of view, I would guess The Lion King set the mark for future feature length 'cartoons' - It was a great film when I saw it, and I am sure I would still like it today.

May be not the *most* but it has pervaded Western thinking, seen the collapse of old communism, and changed the entire globe:-

"Wall Street"

Who could forget Michael Douglas's "Greed is Good" speech.

The same thinking has entered almost every country, every aspect of life and culture, and most institutions. The film sumarised this "wave" of capitalism so poigniantly.

The Matrix - Darn! Should have thought of that one :D

I think that Toy Story was more of an evolution - it was where the Pixar shorts & The Simpsons' theme of "animation with 'adult' humour" converged.

Mind you - I was quite surprised when no-one knew who Pixar were  I had been a fan of Luxo Jr. for so long that the hype was just a bit strange for me...

Seven is one of the best dark thrillers of recent times that has still not been bettered.
Die Hard was the first blockbuster of its type that has been regularly copied.
Alien was another leader in its field.

Others that I will not forget are:
The Shawshank Redemption, Silence of the Lambs, Fight Club, The Sixth Sense, Gladiator.

No.
And as I say again it can't be influenced by Saving Private Ryan if its made by the same people !!! Thats like saying the Matrix Reloaded is influenced by the Matrix !

Again, Wall Street I can't think of a film that it has influenced....

and Die Hard... Not THAT influential really, as it covered ground films like Terminator had done before it... But still, a damn fine film.

Everything else you've named MartinP, I totally agree with.

re the matrix
also 'borrowed' quite a bit from Blade
so because it borrowed a lot, loses on the influential side

only one ever stuck out for me is Toy Story from an influential viewpoint

If you go back a little further, you could undoutedly say Star Wars. How many sci-fi/action films would never have got made if it wasn't for Star Wars, and it had a big influence on TV too. Perhaps the whole resurgence of Star Trek (the films and the TV series) in the 80's could be attributed to the success of Star Wars. If you think about it, we're still riding the post Star Wars sci-fi wave.

But in 15 years, then maybe you could say The Matrix which not only pushed special effects forward, but more importantly used them in an imaginative way. Or another candidate might be Terminator 2, which was really the first all action blockbuster to make use of CGI (this is where somebody mentions something that came first).

Also as already mentioned, the Scream films really reinvinted the horror genre, and so they deserve a mention.

Toy Story is great, but it only really happened because the technology had reached a point to make it possible, it wasn't really revolutionary in it's own right.

Star Wars would be hig in the list i reckon. After 30 odd years, its still one of the worlRAB most popular films. I am sure it has influinced many other films since it came out!

I'm following the herd here a bit I know but ...

Toy Story A great piece of computer animation which spawned endless hi-tec/low talent copies (eg Ice Age:yawn: )

Pulp Fiction Set the standard of cool for the Nineties..

Saving Private Ryan Again a standard-setter. Any war-film in the next twenty years or so will be taking this as it's benchmark.
