What is the lifestyle and safety like in Australia?

How is it down under? :)
I've heard great things about Australia, like their friendliness, weather and apparently good lifestyle. But then I've also heard bad things, like about their creatures or animals (mainly insects).
I've read and heard alot about the "deadly," venomous and biting snakes, spiders, insects, sea creatures, you name it. It's enough to make me not want to go there anymore, me having a severe case of arachnophobia and all.
Is all this talk just over-exaggerated tourist crap? And I believe dropbears are fictional, am I correct. :P

**One more thing if you dont mind me asking, is there any place in Australia with the least insects and snakes or whatnot?
I'm a Canadian considering going to university in Australia in a few years.

Oh yes, it certainly is. We do have many creatures which are dangerous but it's rare to see any of them. At least you won't be attacked by any enormous man-eating bears or get snowed in here.

Yes drop-bears are fictional but I'll get thumbs down now for letting you in on the secret...so for goodness sake don't tell anyone I said anything.

Edit: is there any place in Australia with the least insects and snakes or whatnot?
Yes, all the cities and large towns and most built up areas.
Don't be alarmed you'll be just fine if you visit us.
I'm absolutely mind-numbingly terrified of snakes and other reptiles and I've lived here for 55 years and still going strong.

Lifestyle is very laid back. Leave your shoes in Canada! Most locals walk barefooted, particularly in Queensland.

As far as safety goes, Brisbane is a very dangerous slum. The Gold Coast has many gangs and gang violence. Sydney has motorcycle gangs. There are also many racial attacks on Middle Easterners and Indians.

its a wonderful place yes it has all those things but they are not everywhere its what makes us unique here. the people are friendly omg drop bears thats hilarious i havent heard that for ages l o l ....Its a great lifestyle lots of great things to see and do I'm sure you would love it here...

haha yeh dont believe anything you hear about drop bears. but yeah, we are in general a really friendly country with an incredibly laid back lifesyle and awesome weather.

you arent the first person who has been worried about our animals, and you definately wont be the last. we do have a lot of deadly animals, snakes and spiders in partiular. but the thing is, they live mainly in the outback or rainforests etc. you might see some snakes if you go out of town, to farms or country towns, or do a lot of bushwalks. snakes mainly come out in these areas in summer, but ive heard spiders like autumn weather more. you hardly ever see spiders though, just the usual common house spiders that you get anywhere in the world. the main spider you are even likely to see is the daddy long legs, and they cant hurt you at all. if you live in a city you are free from snakes, and you would e unlucky to see many spiders. even if you visit the country (go to a farm or go bush walking etc) you are still unlikely to see either animal. i have never known anyone that has been killed, or even just bitten by a snake or a spider.
