What is the law on scrapping old cars in the UK?

I have an old non runner VW. It failed it''s MOT and would cost too much to put it right. But without an MOT how can I get it to the scrap yard. Anyone know the rules or have any suggestions as to how to dispose of it - legally. It's actually in very good condition except for the engine. Thanks
