What is the latest on Nimiq 4?

Signal strength in North Bay is 97 to 100 % on all transponders for HD. This is a great improvement from 70 to 75 that was obtainable before. I do think the
to PQ is better as well.

It sounds like your friend is around the Minneapolis latitude?

I hope then someone that knows about spot beams can answer - but maybe they use overlapping circles (for lack of a better word) to cover Canada? Maybe the 8 Ka band channels are used this way?

It will be interesting to see a coverage map when this is all said and done.

It used to be.. I had some pretty long signals on 82 when using a 20" dish.. If I use a sperate lets says 24".. it was no problem.. could hit the high 90's. Now with Nimiq4 up there.. litterally half of my transponders hit 100% but before it was as low as 50%,, yet 91 was hitting mid 80's and 90's no problem. Its like you had to compensate for one or the other, high signal on 82, then crap for 91 or vice versa. But how do you chose?? you want HD but then you dont want to necessarily sacrafice the core programming?!?! 72.7 might be fine in the West.. atlease Alberta.. I cant see it being that difficult getting 72.7 from here is 82 is comming in as strong as it it.. but why 129?? thats further west than Starchoice... theres no way bell can have a dish to hit 82,91,129?? lol its 38 degrees.. Maybe Bell needs to consider 99 or 101?? who knows..
 
Hopefully they can move some current HD channels over, convert eveything to MPEG4 aswell as add some missing HD channels like CNN HD, TLC HD, SPEED HD etc...
 
So Nimiq 4 is taking over slowly.. Friday Oct. 3rd, TP29@82W I had a signal strength of 66%, this morning I have 95%.
 
Only 1 transponder coming through from 82 in northern CA. I'll give it a few more days before doing something drastic like moving my dish around...
 
Legally, 12.2-12.7 ghz requires 9 degrees seperation, although currently 4.5 degree seperation is being reviewed for that spectrum. Dish in the U.S. is pushing hard for this, and will need to get CRTC and FCC approval for this, as they want to put 'tweeners' that could in theory interfere with 82w and 91w.
 
What channels are on TP 10 on satellite 91? I just tested TP 10 and it came in at a steady 78%--which is ample for SD channels. If you have a working 82 swap wires and LNB's with 91 to see if that helps any.

"We have had a successful mission with the Proton M Breeze M rocket, carrying the Nimiq 4 satellite built by EADS Astrium for Telesat. We have had confirmation that the satellite separated from the vehicle on schedule at 3:00 am Eastern time, or 7:00 am GMT, 9 hours and 11 minutes after liftoff.

Everything occurred as planned with ignition, shutdown and separation of the Proton’s first three stages. Then the Breeze M upper stage with the satellite continued the mission, igniting five times, then releasing the satellite into transfer orbit."
 
Any news on what will be switching to the new satelite or if it will be doing anything with MPEG4?
 
Go get the largest dish you can find in Central Flordia and get back to us with some test results, that would be of major help :)
 
Different programming tiers, especially when it comes to international stations and sports. Boston and Seattle locals, plus the ability to timeshift with the Canadian stations. Also with the exchange rate (not as relevant now mind you) it was a good cheap alternative.

As for KA, yes DirecTV does use them but they require a bigger dish. KA is really key for internet services and other non-residental use.
 
Nimiq 4 is only there to help nimiq 2 so I don't think the purpose of this sat will be for MPEG 4 sense there is SD programming still on nimiq 2 and allot of people with the international package wouldn't be that impressed if they did that. Im thinking they might start with MPEG 4 with nimiq 5 next year but who knows.
 
Oh well. I guess we'll just have to wait and see what happens since even reports directly from Bell can change drastically. Peace
 
If you are located within Canada you should not loose any channels at all.

It is pure speculation as to the footprint that Nimiq 4 will have. Lets be honest, if Bell do not want people to watch their TV south of the border, they could have the footprint adjusted to limit reception.
 
Just a couple points of clarification here:
- The licenses don't belong to Bell, they belong to Telesat
- Telesat leases the Nimiq satellites to Bell
- Bell can then sub-lease that capacity to Dish, CTV etc.

Obviously Telesat works closely with Bell to determine what orbital positions and frequency bands they would like etc.

I'm not sure if lease/sub-lease relationship would violate the IC rules regarding capacity being used primarily for Canadian needs, but in my mind it certainly violates the spirit of those if the entire capcity were leased to an American DTH operator.
 
Could someone please tell me if Nimiq 4 will provide stronger signals for the 82 transponders.
