What is the homestyle method? Culinary and cooking defentions?

I have only ever heard homestlye used in reference to the way food is served. Homestyle is when the food is placed in serving bowls and then they are passed around as opposed to putting each persons meal on individual plates and serving the meal that way.

I looked everywhere but I can't seem to find the defention for homestyle method. I think its a term used for pies, what is it?
