What is the gingerbread update every one is talking about for android phones?

I have the HTC Thunderbolt. I can still trade it in for the Samsung Charge, but ppl say with the 'Gingerbread' update will fix some problems. (Battery, Internet Etc.)

What is this Gingerbread update?

And what's better? Thunderbolt or Charge?

This is for " rooted " phones only. Rooting can improve performance but,
1. Rooted android phones can get virus invasion. Stock Android system never has nor been hacked. And
2. Rooting voids warranty and insurance agreement. K?
