What is the first thing that goes through your head when you hear the word

"discipline"? Does your mind automatically go to punishments and consequences or teaching a child the "proper" manners and way to live?

[lang=zh-CN]Discipline does not mean punishments specifically. It means how you make your life better and acceptable for other people.Children need to learn about it because at the end they will be the ones benefited from it![/lang]

I think about shaking a finger at my son for doing something wrong or putting him in time out for something he did wrong. That IS how you teach manners.

When I hear the word "discipline" I think of mistress misty punishing me for not eating my food from a dog bowl like a dirty little puppy

"to teach" since that's actually the definition. I don't really automatically think of punishments, and definitely don't think of beating children.

My mind doesn't automatically go to corporal punishment if that's what you are fishing for. But that's because that is not the first line of disciplining my children. For some people it is and maybe that's what they would first think of.

Anyway, discipline means correcting the behavior. That could be a time out in the corner, or a toy or privilege taken away, or simply going to bed early. Sometimes it could means a spank too.

First thing? Spanking...

I discipline my 2.5 year old without making him feel pain. I know there is no NEED to pysically discipline any child...if you know the secret to raising children who respect authority you wind up with very well behaved children who only need to be asked to stop bad behavior one time and they stop.

My first thought is, "I DIDN"T MEAN TO WRECK MY BIKE!!!!" or "-.- did they see me climb onto the roof?" But on a serious note, my thoughts are teaching a kid how to behave.

The first thing that goes through my head is "to teach" because I have heard that the word discipline is the Latin word meaning "to teach"

I could be wrong but thats what goes through my head.
