What is the easiest way to test/repair old Christmas lights?

What is the easiest way to test and/or replace Christmas lights?We have aquired numberous amounts of outdoor strands of lights through out the years...half of the lights work on one strand,but half of them dont.I know they are not that expensive,but I hate to throw away something that still has life.
