hiya i just got a months pescription for doryx (doxycycliine hyclate) but my doctor mentioned accutane (which ive heard really bad stories about- suicide and things). i wanted to be sure doryx and accutane are not the same drug. also wanted to make sure doryx is a safe drug to use. that it wont cause any severe depression or long term health defects such a cancer or w/e.

doryx is an antibiotic and accutane is a strong dirivitive of vitamin A. They are not at all the same thing and they don't work in the same way. I've been on both and neither of them worked for me. Some side effects I had from doryx were yeast infections and upset stomache. The side effects I got from Accutane were, headaches, nose bleeRAB, dry flaky skin, dry cracked lips and fatigue. I wish you luck

Cakies is right. It's very different from Accutane, but taking doxycyline can have long term health effects. Yeast infections and stomach problems are some of the most common side effects.

Also, taking antibiotics for acne can have a more serious side effect--resistant infections. Taking acne dosages doesn't really make it less likely that you'll get sick, but if you do get sick, the doctor can't use any antibiotic related to the one you are already on. People you come in close contact with may have the same problem. (Drug resistant pneumonia in an 85-year-old is bad news).

If your acne is really severe, and no topical treatments helped, maybe you need the antibiotics. Otherwise, it's probably not worth the risk.

Have you tried aspirin masks or tea tree oil?
