What is the difference between a World phone (like iPhone 3GS with Telus in

Canada) and Unlocked phone? Can I use the Canadian Telus iPhone (World phone) in Asia by replacing my Canadian SIM card with an Asian SIM card?
Do I have to get it Unlocked first? ...or does World Phone mean it's already unlocked? Thanks.
