I know it seems a very obvious question, but what comparatively are the differences between a poet and a novelist?
I have a piece of coursework over this year, where I have to compare poetry and a novel - (please see my other currently open question about choice of text!!) - and I think if I could have a better idea about the comparative differences in style/layout/themes/language etc etc between the two, I can write a better essay!

Thanks in advanced!

Read the Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Euxpery. There is no difference there between a poet and a novelist. Same for Tolstoy and Dostoevsky. Now go and read Dan Brown. Where is the poetry?
