what is the difference between 1 and 4 ohms?

i have a 500 watt rms sub running on a 1000 watt rms amp and i am running it at 4 ohms. i see how to wire it down to 1 ohm. what will that do in terms or the volume of my sub and all that. once i turn it up too loud the way it is now, it starts clicking. so my main question is what are all the differences between wiring my sub to 1 ohm or 4 ohms?
