What is the conclusion to the book Old Yeller?

I'm not sure how to explain the conclusion of Old Yeller. 10 point if it is in your own words!

Plot: Travis has to take care of his mom and little brother while his Papa goes on a long cattle drive to Abilene.

Conclusion: Unknown
 
doesn't the dog get rabies and have to be shot?? thats all i remember unless i am confusing it with something else
