It's all over the news that the Chevy Volt is rated by the EPA at 230 miles/gallon. This is obviously based on the fact that it uses no gasoline for up to 40 miles/day, so the EPA is coming up with that figure basically by guessing how people will use the car. My question is what mileage does it get after 40 miles? Suppose you take a 500-mile trip so that the gasoline engine is running the whole time -- how much gasoline will that require? This is something that should be included in the news reports but I haven't seen it.
