What is the best year of a used Honda civic?

I am currently a college student and am looking to get a used Honda civic sedan from a private seller or towing yard. My budget is about $3000 including having the car checked at by a mechanic first. However, I don't know if there is a certain year that is worse than the rest or if they are all generally the same so the older the car the "worse" it is.
