I am doing a debate and i am on the affirmative side, but I totally disagree with the debate. What can I do to make myself believe its true?

Try to put yourself in the mindset of someone who would agree with it. What else would that person have to believe? What would they have to disagree with you on, and what would motivate someone to feel that way?

To prepare the actual debate, just read materials that support that case, and argue only from sources that support what you have to argue.

Mind yourself during the debate! It is possible to psychologically undermine yourself and not argue your best simply because you WANT your disagreeable platform to lose. Remember that the issue itself is not the issue here: it's your skill at arguing it! You ARE at a marked disadvantage, because you've probably steeped yourself in the opposition's source material voluntarily in your own reading. Be careful that you don't let anything slip that proves their points!

I am at university and we have to critique essays all the time. What the markers are looking for is hard evidence to prove what you say is correct - you cannot be marked wrong. If you have that then you will pass. Ensure that you reference all your work.

I doubt you will make yourself believe that it is true.

With that in mind, think of what the negative side are going to say. Then, think of how those points are questionable. Is the evidence that accurate, is it biased, was the research not done THAT fairly? What's not so perfect about the points the negative side is going to mention? Can you really TRUST the information that is going to be mentioned?

Think up of questions that will question the opposing side and answer them. Now, you may be able to find opposing evidence to help you support the argument you don't really want to put forward. Chances are that's going to be hard but there's not a lot you can do but to get the debate over and done with.

Good luck and all the best.
