What is the best way to check a mountain bike at the aiport?

I'm interested in making some weekend excursions throughout the U.S.; and I'm concerned with how difficult it may be take a bike without paying an arm and a leg.
 
It is the best to take off the wheels and put bubble wrapping around everything and then get some flat boxes to but the frame in seporate from the wheels.

It's a pain but the best way. I think you might be able to just claim it as your luggage but I dunno.

You can also ship it for a low cost too.
