What is the best type of fish for pets.?

Whatever you prefer. Some people like small schooling fish in a community planted tank, some people like fish that will tear apart live plants and their tankmates.
Just make sure you know their potential sizes(not just the size when you buy them) and their requirements. Being raised in captivity will lower the maximum size of the fish, but it will not stop them from "outgrowing their tank"
Fancy tailed goldfish need 20g each, 10g for each additional one
Comet goldfish need a 50g each
and Koi need to be in ponds of 500g+
If you decide to get goldfish, make sure you get them enough space. A bowl is not enough space for any fish.

Depends on your tank set up and if you've had any experience keeping them.
What is your tank set up? For a first tank I would recommend something LARGE, small tanks are limiting and actually more difficult to care for than a larger tank!
Keeping fish as pets is more than just putting the fish in water. In fact your job is to keep water, not fish, your job is to keep the water quality healthy. When the water goes bad your fish will get sick.

edit: It's a common misconception that Goldfish are easy. They just sometimes put up with a lot of crap! But they are actually surprisingly high maintenance. Just look at all the posts on here about sick Goldfish! They need very large and over filtered tanks. They are also potentially very long living.

Any fish can be the best type for a pet, but that is based on what you can afford, what you can maintain and what you think is good looking.
If anything, a Betta in a 5 gallon, filtered and heated tank would be a good idea. Always fishless cycle prior to adding fish, make sure the filtration doesn't cause too much current and the heating is between 77 and 80 Fahrenheit. Check out the link for Betta care.

When you think of it, there is such a wide variety of freshwater fish to choose from that can be your best pet, but it's totally up to you to research as much as possible about it in order to have a happy and healthy wet pet.
