What is the best product to get rid of rust on Bike Rims?

We got a bike given to us by some friends, they bought the bike brand new last year. Its a mountain bike. Its a very nice bike, however they left it outside the entire winter in Minnesota. So the rims are rusted and some of the screws and joints. I want to take the rust off. What is the safest, yet most effective product? I heard Whink works wonders on household stuff like tubs and sinks. Does it work in this case too?

Use chrome polish from the auto store. SOS pads or fine steel wool with a lite oil will work also.
