Definitely Quadrophenia by the Who
Closely followed by the soundtrack of Ghost World and Arizona Dream

I remember the scores of a couple of movies I saw around ten years ago fondly:

1) the score to The Player, by Robert Altman, released in 1992. The music was by Thomas Newman, who's done a number of other movie scores, but I don't think any big hits (eg, he did "Green Mile" and "Shawshank Redemption", according to the Amazon links). I liked the music so much that I almost bought the soundtrack on CD then, but I didn't own a CD player at the time. Now, I just looked it up on Amazon, and they have one used copy, for $90!

2) The Thin Blue Line, a documentary by Errol Morris, had a great instrumental soundtrack by Philip Glass, who is famous enough that it's still in print.

As far as sound tracks that have popular music, I saw the movie version of Starsky and Hutch a few months ago, and it had a great cheesy '70's soundtrack.

Jess519 mentioned the movie Singles. I never saw it, but I've lived for 18 years two blocks south of the apartment building where Matt Dillon's character lived.

One night, I was waiting for the bus across the street from the building. It was about 40 degrees F., and raining, but they were filming that night, a scene that required Dillon to play a guitar while shirtless in the courtyard.

There was a guy standing at the bus stop to tell people waiting at the bus stop to be quiet during filming. But suddenly, a small dog with a shrill bark began to make a ruckus in the alley right next to the courtyard. The guy ran across the street to shut it up, but I've wondered whether the dog's voice was edited out, or left in to make it seem like a more realistic street scene.

Love Actually is really great! Such lovely songs from such a great film!

Pirates of the Caribbean, Titanic, LOTR are the 3 best scores. I also like the Back to the Future one.

All the 3 LOTR soundtracks, definitely. I also think that The passion of the Christ had pretty impressive score, I'll probably buy that one soon.

I prefer scores, I think they're better than the soundtracks that are just a compilation of songs which very often weren't even made for the movie...

I agree :D I would definitely consider Titanic of course having one of the most powerful scores I've ever heard. Other than that, crazy/beautiful has a lot of great music that reminds you of how the characters feel (Nicole and her best friend), The Passion of the Christ simply being just that-passionate, and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Just because it has so many different tracks and the movie being very different too made me wanna buy it, so I wasn't disappointed  It's a fun soundtrack. Recently I bought the soundtrack for Troy, which has great composing in it as well. James Horner, go figure.

Requiem For A Dream: I just can keep listening to that

But also the LOTR soundtracks, pirates of the carribean, Robin hood:prince of thieves, solaris,...

Ufff....there's so many!!!...first, the ones i have:
Moulin Rouge
Empire Records
Spider man 1
Matrix 1
Brave Heart
The Piano
Cruel Intentions
Schindler's list
Psicosis
A beatiful Mind
10 things i hate about you

And now the ones i really, really want!!
Troy
Love Actually

Everything by James Horner i love....those are the best soundtracks ever...

Grease is great. and I love Hairspray too. and Mamma Mia! of course. and all the HSM soundtracks. and Love Actually is just perfect

To many to list here

Basically, any "classical" scores by the cinema giants like James Horner ("Apollo 13"); Jerry Goldsmith ("First Blood"); Hans Zimmer ("Lion King") and others.

I really like Trevor Rabin and Mark Mancina ("Con Air"; "Deep Blue Sea") of the "new" composers.

Not so fond of John Williams, however. He's a classic, but his scores are all to similar whereas the others listed have a more distinct sound to all of thier work (except maybe Horner who literally does recycle himself in certain movies).
