What is the best laptops / notepads for photography?

Strong and fast enough to handle photoshop.

Mine's dual core, 4 gig, vista, 512 video, and it handles it well enough. Complicated filters and processes take 5-10 seconds or so, but it's manageable. You can get a very solid editing laptop for less than $1000.

Jay is right. A dual core processor, at least a 15.4 inch screen and 4 gb of RAM is a good start.

If you can find one with an ExpressCard 54 port, you will be able to later buy an Expresscard card reader adapter. It can copy image files to your computer much faster than standard USB card readers.

You will also want to look at Adobe Lightroom as your primary photo processing program. Adobe published it specifically for photographers and is not bloated with post production and pre-press features and cost a lot less ($300 for Lightroom vs.$700 to $1,000 for Photoshop)
