Seriously though, the question is meaningless.

Many people would say 'Citizen Kane', 'Battleship Potemkin' or even 'Star Wars' or something like that... there are thousanRAB of films that anybody could come here and make a good case for.
 
There are far too many excellent films for me to choose a single best film.

Once Upon a Time in America, Tootsie, and Dr Strangelove are three very different films that I enjoy watching again and again.
 
Are you talking about on the C4 top 100 count down? Cos I thought that was done on box office takings not public vote? :confused:

My all time favourites are 'Breakfast at Tiffanys' and 'Pulp Fiction' both very different I know, but both SOO well done.
 
C4 have done 1 on British box-office receipts which Gone With The Wind won I think - nothing to do with quality of film of course.

They also did a top 100 which I think Star Wars won - trouble with that was that they chose the shortlist on which we could vote, and it wasn't a universal vote.

There are various other top 100s out there, and even a top 1000 on the 'They Shoot Pictures Don't They' website.

For all it's faults, the best meter of public opinion may be the IMDB top list, simply because it includes every film ever made and gets lots of traffic. It has The Godfather at number one I believe.

But as is said earlier in the thread, there is almost certainly no way to absolutely decide what the best film ever made is, because the criteria for such an award differs from person to person.

My favourite film is probably Vertigo.

It does rank in the category of films that make me smile for the entire 90~ minutes though, as it is in the very, very rare 'So bad it's genius' envelope.

Shawshank is a film that has gone full circle, from underrated all the way through to overrated.

As great a film as it is, it aint the best film ever, not by any stretch.
