what is the best dual sport?

I'm planning a trip in Australia for about 5,000-6,000 miles and will be riding over 30 percent road and 70 percent sand and dirt. I'm planning on making a lot of water crossings and want something that will take the water well. I'm leaning towards the kawi klr650 but my buddy likes the yamaha xt660x. Price is also a factor...
