what is the best dog to suit our lifestyle?

me and my wife are looking for a dog for our kids we would prefer a small type .we woek from 9 to 3 each day but my wife would come home at lunch time to walk it .and anytime where at home the dog would live inside
what do you think would be the best dog to get
our kids are 19,16 and 14
