What is the best cough medicine?

I have been having some issues with sinus drainage for over a week now, and a resulting scratchy throat which is making me cough a lot.

It wasn't really annoying until a couple days ago, but the last couple nights the scratchy throat and coughing has made it difficult to sleep. Last night I could not fall asleep until after 4 AM.

What's the best OTC stuff I can take for this?

Hi ghunt

Sorry to hear your feeling like that. I have been there and it sucks.

I use Delsum. For me it really works. Its non drowsy, so you can take it during the day with no problem. It helps with the cough so I can sleep at night too.

Hope you feel better.

What is Delsum, is that a brand name?

I forgot that I have some leftover prescription cough syrup from a couple years ago when I had severely swollen tonsils...it has codeine in it, so it should be great for helping me sleep, but not so much during the day.

I guess I'm wondering also if there's a particular ingredient to look for that really helps?

It's Delsym, I think. And it works well - a little pricey though.
I've found the best thing at not for sleep is to pour a little Campho-Phenique on a hankie or kleenex and hold that to my nose (have to lay on your side and rest your hand on your pillow). It really works well for me.

Thanks Titchou...I did spell it wrong. Sorry ghunt if it caused any confusion.

Be careful with the left over cough syrup. It if is a few years old it might have expired.

Get to the root of your problem. Most likely you are having allergy problems. Try taking an anahistamine such as Zyrtec and also Mucinex. Mucinex helps to thin mucous.

I also use 1/2 to 1 teaspoon liquid plain Robitussin just before bed to keep mucous in throat thinned and eleminates the sore throat next morning.

Halls menthol cough drops help too if needed.

Best to try the above before using the hard stuff such as codiene.
