What is the advantage of having a parking pass to a football game?

What is a parking pass? I'm going to the Jets vs Patriots game this weekend, and the person I bought tickets off of offered me her parking pass along with the tickets, but is it required that I have the parking pass? I'm looking to tailgate as well, is a parking pass required to do so? If I don't get the pass, what is the disadvantage? If I do get it, what is the advantage? How much is it to park without a parking pass? Any info would help, this is my first football game. Thanks!!
