What is that red circle on Indian women's foreheads represent?

Indian as in India, where they wear the sari and have that red spot over the forehead. Just wondering what the symbolism is....
 
It is called Bindi or Kumkum. It is considered good. They put it there as that is an energy spot. It also adds to the beauty of the person who puts it on her forehead. Though it is not a custome in many religions, still quite a few people put it as it enhances their appearance.
It is all ones own belief and faith. We can agree to disagree and respect each other's faith without ridiculing the other, just because we do not know its meaning or purpose behind it.
