what is spiro?

Spiro is a drug used to treat high blood pressure and recently also hormonal acne in women.

It does this by blocking testosterone receptors in women (I think). Some women who have hormonal acne produce excess levels of testosterone, which can contribute to acne.

I can name general side effects for when it is used for high blood pressue, but I don't know about the lower doses used for acne. I also have no idea how well it actually works for acne (I'm hoping I can find out!), but I assume there is little risk and lots of gain.

Hope this helps!

Hi, I live in the UK, does anyone know if GPs are usually able prescribe this or do I need to go to a specialist? Thanks

yep, this is correct. its main use it to treat high blood pressure. your body produces a hormone that controls blood pressure, and this medication blocks that hormone. it just happens to be similar to testosterone, so the medication blocks that too. testosterone is usually the culprit for hormonal acne in women.

some of my side effects include mild dehydration (spiro is a diuretic), dry skin, slight fatigue, slower body hair growth, less sweating, and weight loss (18 lbs in 8 months). some people also get headaches... i did during the first week, but not since then. i drink lots of water and avoid eating lots of potassium-rich fooRAB.

my GP prescribed it for me.
