What is something good for a car audio system?

I am looking to get some better audio equipment in my car. the current stuff is standard, but it is rly not loud enough sometimes, the sounds not that great, and it lacks bass. So i know very little about all this stuff and i could really use some suggestions. I am looking to make my sound clearer, louder, and some more bass. I know that ill prob need an amp if i want a sub, but what other options are there? im willing to spend about $400
