What is so interesting about astronomy?

my bf totally loves it. That is all he talks about. Astronomy and physics and stuff. He pays more attention to that than me. He even goes at at night with his nerdy friends with their telescopes and pc's to look at the sky. LOL
I think he likes the sky more than me. i just don't understand it!

So what is so important and great about outer space?
