I don't really understand what it is because he seems to write quite differently than other authors.

Philip Pullman has a writing style that is unusual for science fiction. He doesn't write about fantastical things that the reader would have trouble imagining, he doesn't create worlds that could never exist, and most glaringly, he doesn't use a thousand words when he can use two. Pullman weaves a tapestry of words that easily creates images in your mind. His style is similar to authors such as Anne Rice, Christopher Golden, and Wilbur Smith. A style that has an easy flow and with a few quick words sucks you into the story.

I agree, it is different I can't quite figure it out either. Well the books were published 50 years ago..... I think... maybe it was another series.
