What is most important in a car insurance plan?

Okay, I know this is a complicated question that I'm asking on Yahoo! Answers, but hopefully somebody can give a credible answer. I'm about to get my first car and I want to make sure I have the proper insurance. I don't want an insurance company talking me into buying more than I need, nor do I want to be under-protected.

So what's most important? I thought I'd heard that liability coverage was more important than collision. Is that true? How much liability should I need? If someone could give me some good suggestions with some numbers, I'd really appreciate it.

Liability is a must as far as I know for all states in the US. Comprehensive and collision are required by lien holders if you have the car financed. If the car is paid off, you need to ask yourself if you could afford to fix or do without the car in case of an accident. If the answer is no,then you need comp. and collision. I suggest going to an insurance broker who can give you quotes from several different companies.
