Volswagen Jetta Sedan,
Mazda 3 S,
or Mistibishi Lancer?

I'm driving locally, but I need one for long term.

They are all 3 good, reliable cars for the most part. All manufacturers make good cars nowadays, and at least 1 car from each maker, is going to be best in it's class.
So, it really all comes down to what's in ur budget?
How much do u have to spend?
If u are looking for the least expensive of the 3, then that would be the Lancer. Me personally, like the looks and style and content of the Mazda 3 better. If u can afford it, I would go for the top of the line Mazda 3; The Mazda 3 speed. it's the high performance version of the Mazda 3.
Now if u plan to have a car for at least 5 years or more, long term, and u want the best car for resale value afterwards, then u gotta go with the Volkswagen Jetta. Volkswagen quality is as good as the japanese now, and ur getting german engineering at a honda or toyota price. I think the new 2008 model is the best looking 1 yet they have made and would be the best all around car for u, if u can afford the slightly higher cost... Good Luck on ur decision!

ANY HYBRID OR 4CYLINDER COMPACT HONDA, NISSAN, TOYOTA, MAZDA, HYUNDAI AND SCION ARE VERY GOOD WELL BACKED IN AFTERMARKET PERFORMANCE AND REPLACEMENT PARTS. THEY HAVE SOME GREAT STYLES AND OPTIONS YOU CAN CHOOSE FROM AND USUALLY VERY GOOD RESALE VALUES.

YOU NEED TO EVALUATE EVERY FACTOR OF YOUR LIFESTYLE AND NEEDS AS TO WHAT MAKES YOUR DECISION. ARE YOU LOOKIN FOR SPORTY, LUXURY, 2DOOR/3DOOR/4DOOR/5DOOR, WHATS YOUR BUDGET $$$, WHATS THE BEST VEHICLE PLAN OFFERS OUT YOU LIKE, ETC...

SCIONS ARE CUTE, A LITTLE SPORTY, LOTS OF OPTIONS, GREAT GAS MILEAGE, USUALLY 2-4DOOR UP TO 5 PASSENGERS, NOT TOO EXPENSIVE IN MAINTENANCE & REPAIR COMPARED TO SOME OTHERS. LOTS OF MY FRIENDS GOT THE xB OR THE Tc.

1 OF MY FRIENDS GOT THE Tc LOADED WITH THE TRD DRESS UP AERODYNAMICS KIT, ALLOY WHEELS, AM/FM/XM/CD/IPOD STEREO, A/C, POWER EVERYTHING, STANDARD ALARM ANTI THEFT, ENGINE DRESS UP, LOWERING KIT AND EXHAUST FOR $21,000 BRAND NEW. IDUNNO BOUT HER MONTHLYS OR THAT PERSONAL STUFF BUT NOT BAD...

OTHER VEHICLES SUCH AS A VOLKSWAGEN GTi/JETTA OR MITSUBISHI EVO/LANCER POTENTIALLY ARE $24,500-$36,000+ ON ITS REGULAR/STANDARD MODELS... THE SCION GOT WELL EQUIPT FOR BOUT $21,000 GIVE OR TAKE. THEY START AT $16,000 LOWEST MODEL...

WELL OF YOUR GIVEN CHOICES THE MAZDA 3 4DOOR IS A GOOD ALL AROUND CHOICE BEST IS THE 2.OL 4CYL DOHC ENGINE 24/32MPG WELL EQUIPT PRICE I FOUND AROUND $22,600 IN THE END IS STILL UP2U...

The best of the 3 is Volkswagen but if you look at long term costs like repair its not. Parts for a VW can be very expensive.

My Volks has never let me down, but when maintenance and repairs come around-it's pricey to fix-that's like the only down side.

It depends on where it's made. If it's new and under warranty, I would get the Jetta and work out the problems under warranty until it's right. The ones built in Mexico pale in comparison to ones built in Europe/Germany, for an example.

Mitsubishi does not have real good build quality in the US like they do in Japan, either.

Mazda and Ford share a lot of components, but for whatever reason Mazdas are much better than Fords.

Were I to rank them, it would go:

1. Mazda
2. Mitsubishi
3. Volkswagen

But if I were going to rank them by the car I would most want to own:

1. Jetta
2. Mazda 3

And I wouldn't take the Lancer, because it doesn't compare. What you get with the Jetta can't be beat by anything in the same price range and the Mazda 3 is amazingly fun to drive. And I would want the previous generation Lancers even less.

The Mazda 3 is definitely the most reliable. It gets great reviews and high marks for reliability, value and performance. The Lancer also isn't a bad car, but not as nice as the Mazda.

Volkswagens aren't very reliable and pretty expensive to maintain. If you want something cheap to own, don't get a VW.
