What is more important?

I am against burning the American flag or other flags, but I am also against this becoming an amendment to the constitution. I saw a bumper sticker, "GOP = God's Only Party." This is an equivalent maneuver by Republicans, as if they are the only patriots. Further evidence of this attitude is Karl Rove's recent speech. Why bring this to a congressional vote? The 2006 elections are around the corner and how people vote on this is going to become a campaign issue.

The position Republicans have taken on this is disgusting. Karl Rove and others like to use the tactic of (figuratively) wrapping themselves in the American flag and declaring themselves to be the only true patriots. I regard that as desecration of the flag. This is especially the case in relationship to Karl, who has never been in a foxhole or armored patrol carrier. Tough talk is cheap. There are no congressional, Bush, Cheney or Rove relatives in Iraq on active duty. The bottom line to this "patiotism" is that Haliburton made $7.1 billion in profits last year and just got the contracts for building a new Guantanomo prison and armed services facilities in the Balkans. Every additional day we are in Iraq, Haliburton and other GOP huge corporations get richer. When they talk about Patriotism, they mean Patrioti$m.

By the way, the only officially legal way prescribed for destroying an old, damaged flag is still burning.

Are you picking up Hunter's old habit of speaking for other people?

Most flag burning is done to protest the government's actions. Disapproval does not equal hate. I have frequently disapproved of things my son has done and let him know it - doesn't mean I don't love him, quite the contrary actually. Sorry you think love can only be found with your nose completely inserted up the asses of the powers that be.

And you sir, in no uncertain circumstances, love what that flag represents. Your very stance on this issue alone is proof of that.

But you said it was more important that what it represents in your vote.

Whether you like it or not, you've said that the flag is more important than freedom, not that the flag is important.

Read the question in the poll. It says "more".

You ignored my original question (or at least the spirit of it). Say Kerry runs again and is elected and a bunch of far left senators and represenatives were elected who you really disagreed with. Would you move out of the country? I'll bet you wouldn't.

And I do know of a few people who actually did move out of the country when Bush was elected, but they are cowarRAB with no love for their country. Love for your country involves fighting to make it better when it is bad, not running away and abandoning it.

I bet that does not make any difference to the 58,000 and the 1,700 men and women that have made the ultimate sacrafice in these 2 conflicts.....They are dead either way............

And is is a fact that the senate vote 98-0 to give the president the authority to go into Iraq.....There are a whole bunch of liberal democrats in the group so that is who your fight should be with becasue they are your boys not mine.........

You've just said that an object that represents something is more important than the actual things it represents.

Are you sticking with that belief?

There was a great quote in a letter to the editor in today's Mpls Star Tribune - - "The symbols of government should never be more important than the principles for which they stand. "

So you're saying that 9/11 and Afghanistan was the reason for Iraq? Last I checked it was because of humanitarian issues although I don't remember any mention of that back when it was because of WMD's. It's funny how quick you are to bring up 9/11. These terrorist attacks were way more deadly than Saddam ever was or would have been to us although we have caught Saddam, where Bin Ladden is is anyone's guess.

I think this is the crux of the problem. VoR sees america as one body, the people, society, culture and politics together. Any attack on the US is an attack on all parts of american society

I think that if he realised that others see these parts as seperate and that flag burnings are aimed at the actions of the government, rather than at him, or the military or the average american, there would not be a problem. I for my own part have little time for Bush and his hawkish frienRAB, but never met an american I did not like, indeed intend to travel to the US,

I love you how liberals trivulize the American flag by calling it just a piece of cloth...What you fail to understand is although it is a piece of cloth the important thing is what it represents, not what it is physically made of............

Since your not from this country so your not familiar with our political process I will give you a little lesson on how it works.......Now try and concentrate like a laser beam......

.When we are not satisfied with the government we vote the rascals out.......We don't burn our flags..........Not only did President Bush win re election by over 3,000,000 votes but he increased his margin of victory in every state taht he carried and increased representatives in the house and in the senate which has not been done since 1952.........

When a vote was taken in the senate to give the President the authority to go to war it was carried by a 98-0 vote which even someone as bias as you have to admit that is pretty conclusive..........When it was voted on in the HOR it was 420-1 which is also pretty conclusive.........

That is they way we do it here...........You know it works pretty well too......We have our differences but we are not killing each other like the Catholics an Protesants do in Northern Ireland....

You ignore history, there have been liberal presidents and conservative presidents and we now have a pseudo conservative president. Democrats were in control for forty years and now the Republicans hold the majority. The tide turns and returns and the body politic morphs into new entities with old labels.
