What is military hoousung like?

My husband and I just started the process of appling to live on base. i want to know how long would it take before we get housing. he is in McChord AF in WA. what are our chances of getting hosung within 30 days. keep in mind we do not have any kids.. will it worth waiting for or just apply for apt of base. I havent been out there yet so i dont know what to expect. i dont know what the place is like or anything.

I have lived in housing through out my husband's career. I can't complain. All will depend on your husband's rank and timed served. As mentioned you will only get a two bedroom but most units have a washer and dryer. All military housing has guidelines for the grass and the yard. Actually, I liked the units that had small yards as there was less to care for.
My biggest complaint was the neighbors. There were a lot of wives who did not work. Gossiping was a huge problem. They would sit at their window and know everything about you. You have to set clear boundaries from the beginning.
 
military housing is small and cramped. The yards are small and your neighbors are close to you.
Tjhe houses may be old and need work. unless you have children, you will be given a small house.
also, army housing has strict guidelines. i.e grass length and paint color.

Military housing is more than adequate. The total space and amenities grow in relation to your rank, with officers having the best
and most spacious, E-7 - E-9 next and on down the line.
 
Most of the time the waiting list is long for married with no children. You have to apply at the housing office regardless and they will tell you how long the wait list is and if they have an opening right away and you don't like it you can just decline. The phone number for housing is 253-982-5514, call and they will give you an estimated wait time. You will probably be better off living off post anyways. Go to the following website and it lists your bah and you can go ahead and look at housing off post now in case you do end up living off post. Good Luck!

I don't know about McChord specifically, but most bases will let you get on the wait list for housing and will give you an idea of the estimated time of availability. You didn't say rank, but I would expect you'd probably be a 2 bedroom duplex type situation.

Keep in mind, you can get wait-listed for housing, but that doesn't necessarily mean you're obligated to live on base. You should apply for the on-base housing, then when you get there if you hate it, stay in the temporary housing on base for a few days while you arrange something off-base.
