what is it really like in jail?

I'm just curious. Is it really horrible like on TV shows and movies and stuff? Or does it just suck like you're bored all the time or what? Do people really get raped? Do drugs really get in? Do you have any freedom or privacy at all? Please only answer if you know for a fact and you're not just guessing. Thanks in advanced.
