What is it meant by "RMS per a channel"? Car audio system.?

I'm looking to buy a head-unit and I want to better understand what I'm buying so I can get what I want. What is meant by "RMS per a channel"? I understand what RMS is but what is considered a channel and how can I relate those to my speakers to get the best sound as in quality and loudness?
 
it means that your head unit sends X amount of watts RMS to a channel- a speaker.
pretend your head unit is 17rms watts per channel, that means each speaker will get 17 watts at nominal power. usually the best thing you can do is get a 4 channel amplifier to boost the power to your 4 speakers, it will increase rms power which improves clarity. by doubling the power you get 3 db increase in loudness, although you dont want to have too much power per speaker.
