what is it like to buy a house?

I don't plan on getting married, ever. So what if one day I decide I hate apartments. and wanted to buy a house. Houses are like.... 100 grand and up right? I have no idea what a mortgage is but I know that I do not want one because I hear way to many old people complaining about them. If I payed for a house in full... what would come next... It just seems complicated. I mean with an apartment you pay 600 a month for rent... that's it. But since you bought the house and you own it you don't have to pay rent anymore.. So im guessing you have to pay for utility's now? How much are those? explain to me how a house works.
