I was quoted $400 for a tune up (that includes replacing the spark plug wires). Just wondering if anybody knows what is involved in the tune up and if this is a reasonable price???

spark plugs only really unless wires are needed which you could buy for 20 bucks and tools to do the job stil wouldnt cost 100.. so is your plug wires bad 60 to 80 bucks for a good set of wires id call a few places thats way high for plugs and wires call any parts store ask about pricing plugs and spark plug wire set call three shops wil get you a ideal of prices

spark plugs:4.00 each (you need 6) 24.00
spark plug wires - 40.00 - 85.00 - - - from chepies to premiums

Only 1 hour labor at 45.00 per hour mechanic normal.

So about 150.00 would be a better estimate. This is very easy to do, all you need is: a spark plug gapper a 3/8" ratchet-6" extention and a 13/16" spark plug socket
Take one off at a time, gap and replace, then replace the wire with the same size from the box.

I would do AC Delco sparkplugs, sparkplug wires, pcv valve, air filter, fuel filter.

Spark Plugs $30
Spark Plug Wires $35
Pcv Valve $3
Air Filter $15
Fuel Filter $13

So thats like $100 in parts and 2 1/2 hours of labor.

I don't know what there hourly rate is a hour but like 80 to 100 should be normal. So it should be about $350 im thinking. I would request the cheaper but middle of the road wires because thats where the price goes up alot but make sure they use AC Delco plugs.

400 is fair if tune is a compleat job...you have a 10 yr old car....
1 plugs/wires/cap/rotor
2 clean egr
3 check all belts/hoses
4 flush radiator fill w 50/50 coolant/water mis
5 oil/filter
6 check brake rotate tires
7 check all fluids
8 change tranny fluid
9 air filter
10 some say fuel filter ..i say ive driven cars for 40 yrs and never replaced one

If your going to keep the car for a few more years, the most important item in the "tuneup" may be the new spark plug wires. So make sure you get good quality new spark plug wires for that cost quote. But another very important maintenance item on GM cars is to replace the engine coolant ("Dexcool") every 2 years. GM says it lasts 4 years, but there's been problems with Dexcool lasting that long. Will they change the engine air filter and fuel filter for that cost? What about the PCV valve (an inexpensive maintenance)? What about cleaning the throttle plate and bore? (an easy maintenance job)? What about changing the transmission fluid?
