...rider pedals backwards? I cant take apart the wheel because I guess I dont have the tools to do so. I want to take out this feature of the bike so I can turn it into a unicycle. if anyone has any good websites it would certainly be appreciated.
 
A pair of brake shoes that work against the inside of the wheel hub.....

a unicycle type wheel is direct drive, and uses a different type of hub.....
