What is Google Android?

I'm not entirely sure what it is, but I've heard it is a serious competitor to the iPhone OS. I also heard that it is open source.

What I'm really looking to understand is whether it is a replacement OS for any phone, like Linux is to any computer. Can it work with any hardware (albeit with tweaks)? Is it something that one can install if they are unhappy with the way their phone's system functions, or am i on a completely wrong track here?

Can you tell me this info as well as similarities to the iPhone?

Thanks
Sameh

Androd is compare to iPhone as Linux is compared to Windows. While it is open source OS for certain smartphones, it doesn't matter until there are more apps for it. Let the geeks beta test/build it up before you think of it as a major competitor to the benefits of iPhone, Blackberry, Palm, etc.

Android comes preinstalled on certain types of smartphones. It is integrated into Google apps and relies heavily on cloud computing. It allows developers to write apps in Java which can be installed on your phone.

I think they released part of the code, not the all of it.
