what is flashing a phone?

i just asked a question and it involved flashing a phone. what doest that mean? is it dangerous and do i have to flash it or do i take it to the company and have them flash it?
 
You can flash phones from more mainstream carriers like Verizon to Cricket and Smaller Prepaid Companies.

It isn't dangerous, I'm not positive on how to do it. Search Craigslist for Phone flashing in your area. You can usually get them flashed for $40 or so.
People will take phones with bad Meid/ Esn numbers and use them on another network where its still usable.

Make sure that the service you are flashing to is compatible with the type of hardware the phone your flashing. Example : Verizon is a CDMA technology network. Cricket is too.
