There is a small (less than a quarter inch long), dull black, hard shelled bug chewing on the buds, leaves and blossoms of my rose bushes. It drops off the roses when it is touched and then scrambles into the mulch. I have tried spraying with soap and insecticides but it just keeps coming back. They are easy to hand pick and destroy if I have the time and diligence.
I have never seen this insect before and neither has my rose growing neighbour (who does not have them on her bushes) I live in a zone 5 area. Does anybody know what it is or how to deal with it?
Thank you for your consideration.
